Thomas "T.J." Ashford Jr. is the son of Shawn Butler and Jordan Ashford, although it is currently believed that Jordan's late husband Thomas "Tom" Ashford Sr. is T.J.'s father. Only Shawn and Jordan know T.J.'s truth paternity.
T.J. arrived in Port Charles, New York after his mother gave him the options of either staying Shawn Butler or heading off to military school, because she could no longer handle him herself. Shawn had served with T.J.'s later father Thomas "Tom" Ashford Sr. Through Shawn, T.J. meet Molly Lansing who started tutored him and school.
T.J. and Molly became friends and soon started dating. Their relationship started having problems with the arrival of Rafael "Rafe" Kovich Jr. and later Taylor Dubois. T.J. and Molly broke up with because of Molly and Rafe's closeness. T.J. and started dating Taylor. T.J. and Taylor would have a one night stand but the relationship didn't last. T.J. and Molly would soon get back together. Taylor left town and Rafe then died in a car accident.
T.J. was turned upside down when his mother Jordan arrive in town. Jordan was working uncover for the cops. Jordan and Shawn soon started dating which T.J. came to accept. Even after learning learning that Shawn and Jordan's previous affair was why caused Tom's death.
When it was learned that Jordan was working uncover, T.J. turns his back on his mother because her actions caused Shawn to be sent to prison. T.J. goes to live with Shawn's former boss Michael "Sonny" Corinthos Jr..
